View from Koonyum
View from Koonyum
An hour's drive my from my home is Koonyum Range. It is 420m high above the above the ocean and 12km inland, giving it a deliciously broad view of the Byron Bay hinterland and out to the lighthouse, which is barely visible (if at all). I love going up there to feel the fresh cool air, and experience the bushland that is so different from the camphors and farmland that is the shire. Almost defying the indication of the prevailing breeze in the trees, the clouds in the distant sky wisp off in another direction.
This painting seeks to capture that feeling of freedom and height. The trees are there enjoying it too - swaying in the wind and growing according to the breeze. The rhythmic brushstrokes in the distant hills and suggestions of leaves only just attached to the whip-thin branches of the grey gums add to the feeling.
